LOTRO Angle of Mitheithel Starter Guide - Rangers and Ruins Quest Pack

Update 32 brought the new quest pack Rangers and Ruins with the new Angle of Mitheithel region. This area is found South of the Trollshaws and sees you working with the Elves and Men purge the enemies from the sacred ruins of the area and investigate the Enemy’s activity here. Here is my quickstarter guide to the Angle of Mitheithel, along with some screenshots of the region for you to enjoy. But don’t worry, I’ve not included any story spoils, so let’s get to it!

How Can I Play the Angle of Mitheithel?

You can gain access to this quest pack in one of two ways:
  1. Become a VIP: while you are VIP (Subscriber status, to any newer players) you have free access to all this region’s quests, deeds and rewards.
  2. The LOTRO Store: Search for the Quest Pack Rangers and Ruins.

How Much Does Rangers and Ruins Cost?

Assuming you’re not VIP, then it costs 725LPLOTRO Points.

What Level Do I Need to Be?

The Angle of Mitheithel region is for Level 40+. The LOTRO Store says the range is roughly 40-45, though you may go over that. Once you hit L45, of course, you can carry on levelling in standalone regions by moving onto the Wildwood of Bree-land!

How Do I Start the Angle of Mitheithel?

  1. Rock up to Gaerond (34.7S,22.1W) directly. You can do this by heading into the Trollshaws via the Last Bridge in the Lone-Lands. Take the first right turning South and keep going.
  2. At Thorenhad in the Trollshaws a linking quest (called a “vector” in the Update 32 Patch NotesExternal Link (Opens in New Window/Tab)). This quest is ingeniously called The Angle of Mitheithel and can be picked up from Elrohir (31.6S, 15.2W)

What’s the Premise Behind Rangers & Ruins?

I’ll let LOTRO do the talking on this one!

Stretching south from the Trollshaws to the junction of the Bruinen and Mitheithel rivers is a wild land of rocky hills and deep pine-woods, and a graveyard of ancient kingdoms. The ruins of Elves and Men alike crumble among the trees, and the Rangers steal through the shadows of the trees, ever watchful, carrying out secret assignments as the North grows more dangerous by the day.

Travelling to the Angle

Initially you will have to get there yourself the “long way” – i.e. on foot or on a mount.

Stablemasters

Just as an FYI, LOTRO did say that:

Stablemasters in the Trollshaws, parts of Eregion, Lothlórien, Southern Mirkwood, and Eryn Lasgalen now use the Elk Travel Mode. NOTE: Since we have updated the Trollshaws Stablemaster routes players will need to rediscover them.

So even the Thorenhad one will need re-unlocking. Assuming you don’t have Return to RivendellExternal Link (Opens in New Window/Tab) (or Muster in/Guide to Rivendell), or a Hunter campsite set in the Trollshaws, your best bet is to head to the Lone-Lands.

This can be purchased from the LOTRO Store for non-Elves. Elves --not High Elves-- acquire this as a Racial Trait when a minimum of L29 with the Enmity of the Orcs II deed

How to Get There

Start at Ost Guruth and head East, where a new Last Bridge Stablemaster can be found. From there either travel to the different locations to rediscover the other stables, or use Mithril CoinsMithril Coin to take a horse. Just remember to click the Stablemaster when you get there to ensure no MC are wasted!

Other Stables in the Angle

Once you begin questing around, there are three other stablemasters aside from the Last Bridge one. These are the same as the main camps/bases you can find on your map:

Key Camps/Towns

Gaerond

Coordinates: 34.7S, 22.2W

Gaerond is the first key location you’ll encounter and where some of the questlines begin. It also feature a milestone, so if you can then use a milestone slot for here, until you reach another milestone in the region.

Tornhad

Coordinates: 42.4S, 23.3W

This is not a typo from Thorenhad! Tornhad is a village in the far South West of the Angle of Mitheithel at 42.4S, 23.3W. This lovely place has the usual amenities and variety of vendor. But here you can also find:

  • Milestone (42.5S, 23.3W)
  • Crafting Facilities (42.9S, 23.9W)

Tham Lumren

Coordinates: 38.6S, 17.4W

Tham Lumren is located almost in the exact centre of the Map for the Angle of Mitheithel at 38.6S, 17.4W. I said map intentionally as the eastern portion of the region’s in-game map is actually just the Trollshaws.

As well as basic vendors, you’ll find a Quartermaster for Rewards bartering as at the other bases.

New Reputation Faction

The region comes with a new faction: Defenders of Mitheithel. Alongside that, a new barter currency: Marks of the AngleMarks of the Angle can be obtained as rewards for quests and deeds.

Note: Unlike the Wildwood of Bree-land, there are no “reputation consumable” items. So your precious tokens can all go into your wallet towards those rewards!

Bound to Account Rewards!

Something I’ve not seen many places in LOTRO is that the quest rewards in the Angle of Mitheithel are Bound to Account. So you can run all the stories at whatever level and give any Combat Gear to your L40+ alts!

Celebration of Nature

In creating the Angle of Mitheithel, LOTRO have included many species of non-aggressive wildlife. Here are six examples alone and I know there are more. I’m glad that not every animal is aggressive, that’s far more immersive and realistic. Enjoy the area, folks, that’s what it is there for!

Current Rewards

Though I suspect/hope this list may increase, the current rewards based on reputation standing are.

Acquaintance

As with the Wildwood, you can earn your travel skills once you hit Acquaintance. This will not take you long, though, don’t worry!

  • Return to Tornhad – 15 × Marks of the Angle
  • Guide to Tornhad – 15 × Marks of the Angle
  • Muster in Tornhad – 15 × Marks of the Angle

Friend

  • Decoration: Empty Bucket Planter
5 × Marks of the Angle
  • Decoration: Bucket Planter of Wisteria
5 × Marks of the Angle

Ally

There are two cosmetic pets available once you hit Ally standing!

Brown Marble Wolf-Dog
20 × Marks of the Angle

Cinder Hawk
20 × Marks of the Angle

Kindred

Light Grey Squirrel
20 × Marks of the Angle
This squirrel looks so happy!

All Rewards List

And for a summary, here’s the vendor’s list of rewards for the Defenders of the Angle faction.

Quest Reward Decoration

Without giving any spoilers away, you receive the Painting of Mitheithel after completing Ravaedron’s Questline.

TL;DR Time to get Questing!

So, watch this space! Now I’ve done my intro post on the Angle of Mitheithel, I’ll begin writing the guides too. These will be given first to my Patreon Crew before being released publicly. If you’d like Early Access to most of my content, feel free to join up. If you’re okay to wait, that’s cool too.

I’m loving these standalone regions and I’m really glad LOTRO is creating them. I hope you enjoy the Angle as much as I think I will. See you in Middle-Earth!
