Guide: How to change LOTRO Servers | How to transfer a character from one game world to another | How to move to the new 64-Bit Servers

The ability to change LOTRO Servers has been there for a very long time indeed. But the introduction of new, non-legendary, 64-bit servers in 2025 means you may use it more than you ever have before.

This post will look at why you might change your active LOTRO game world, how you can do so, and your restrictions during the process. Let’s get on, shall we?

LOTRO Servers vs Game Worlds – What’s the Difference?

Most of the time there isn’t one. Where other MMOs use the term “Servers”, LOTRO uses “Game Worlds”.

There may be a notable difference during maintenance, though. At the end of downtime, or updates, it is possible to log the client, despite your “Game World” being down.

If the servers (all the machines) are down, you cannot even log in to the client, let alone patch the game. But this differentiation can be important because it facilitate’s how you change LOTRO Servers.

What are the LOTRO Servers Called?

Technically since the Mordor/Angmar Legendary servers kicked in, there are two types of LOTRO Server: 32-Bit and 64-Bit. This has no bearing on the fact you’re running your game client on 64-bit, by the way.

But since early 2025, LOTRO opened EU servers that were physically located in the EU.

Here are the server names:

32-Bit Servers (10)

  • Arkenstone (USA)
  • Belegaer (EU, DE, RP)
  • Brandywine (USA)
  • Crickhollow (USA)
  • Evernight (EU)
  • Gladden (USA)
  • Gwaihir (EU, DE)
  • Landrovral (USA)
  • Laurelin (EU, EN, RP)
  • Sirannon (FR)

The 32-Bit EU Servers are physically in the USA.

64-Bit Servers (6)

  • Orcrist (EU)
  • Grond (EU)**
  • Meriadoc (EU-RP)
  • Peregrin (USA-RP)
  • Glamdring (USA)
  • Sting (USA)**

The 64-Bit EU servers are physically in the EU.

** Keep an eye on announcements as to when you are able to create characters on and transfer characters to these latest servers.

Legendary Servers (3)

The following are legendary servers (VIP Only) and some are 32-Bit, with some being 64-Bit.

  • Angmar (64-Bit, EU)
  • Mordor (64-Bit, US)
  • Treebeard (32-Bit, VIP Only, slow levelling focus)

Why Would You Change Servers?

Apart from “because you want to”, some other reasons might be:

  1. Gaming Performance
  2. Social Reasons (to play or chat with friends on the same server)
  3. Legendary Server Closing Down
  4. To keep all characters together

Let’s chat about these briefly.

You cannot transfer a character to a Legendary Server/World. All Legendary Characters must be levelled from L1 from scratch. You can, however, transfer them away to a 'normal' server.

1. Gaming Performance

Before 2025, this was not a reason to transfer. All LOTRO servers to this date were in the USA. Their geographical “tags” merely denote that people from those zones might be on them, allowing people in European countries, or the States, to play together. You can find players from all nations on both types of server, in reality.

Geographical Proximity

With 2025 including 64-Bit servers, players can choose to park on a server closer to them. The new EU servers are in the EU, hurrah.

For us UK-ers, see “EU” as the “Europe Area” as we’re not in the official EU club.

A closer server means better ping (More info on BandwidthPlace.comExternal Link (Opens in New Window/Tab)), which increases the responsiveness of the game, especially where actions may be quickly queued, such as during combat. This may not matter for solo players like me, who take things slower and maybe opt for easier content. But for Raiders and PvMPers, quicker connection response times may make a difference.

Better Machinery

LOTRO said the new servers are better equipped for the future of LOTRO. Having better hardware should also help smooth some performance issues, though they’ve said that issues caused by the game itself won’t be magically solved by new machinery (but that they’ll work on them).

64-bit servers offer:

…the ability to better manage resources and offer the smoothest possible gameplay experience to our community. These servers operate on modern technological standards…

2. Social Reasons

Your LOTRO server choice changes who you can play with and the people you can interact with through chat.

You may change your LOTRO server for positive and negative social reasons; positively to play with people you like. Or negatively, to avoid people you’d rather not come into contact with.

Also historically Sirannon attracted at least French users allowing French-speakers easier communications.

3. Legendary Server Closing Down

Over the years, LOTRO has trialled different types of Legendary Servers, each with a different focus.

  • Slower (or Faster) XP
  • Slower (or Faster) expansion releases
  • Special events
  • Bonus Wraiths

…and others. But once a Legendary Server has fulfiled its call (even Treebeard might, unless you’re being hasty), players are offered free transfers back to a “normal” world. (Normal World, ha.)

4. Keep Characters Together

If you created characters on multiple worlds, you may opt to change servers to bring them together again. You can’t transfer from a US server to an EU one (or vice versa), but consolidating characters and wardrobes where feasible is definitely a good reason.

This could easily happen if you had limited character slots, but later unlocked more.

How to Change LOTRO Servers / Game Worlds

My Hobbit packs a bag for moving home worlds in LOTRO. At least in my head that's what I see him doing.

While the process in changing servers is quite simple, you are best to be methodical.

  1. Have You Got Enough LOTRO Points? Except in certain conditions, transferring a character from one server to another costs LOTRO Points 2,495 LOTRO Points. (See differences for 64-Bit Server Transfers)
  2. Have You Packed? Before transferring make sure your character has all the items, decorations that you want it to have on the new server. Put these in bags, vault or shared storage. Fling items into the Wardrobe from other characters.
  3. Log into the LOTRO Client but not the Game World.
  4. Press the Transfer button.
  5. Choose your current server and select the correct character(s).
  6. Also choose Shared Items if you want those too.
  7. Choose your new server.
  8. Confirm and wait a while.
  9. Log into your new Game World (when it is open)
  10. Check you have all of your “stuff” and set-up a help ticket if anything’s gone horribly wrong (it probably hasn’t).
  11. Play LOTRO on your new server.

Switching servers can be a quick process, but you’re best to give it 30-60 minutes, at least if your character has loads of stuff. It may also take longer if other players are transferring the same time as you.

Changing LOTRO Server Visual Guide

Here is the visual guide to changing your LOTRO server, step-by-step:

1. Press Transfer

Once you’ve entered your username and password, don’t click “PLAY” and don’t press the Enter key on your keyboard.

Instead, press the Transfer button.

2. Choose the Server

Choose a server you want to transfer characters from. You can only do one “from server” at a time.

3. Choose Character(s)

Select which character(s) you want to copy. Also check the “Shared Items” option if you want to take your Wardrobe, Shared Storage, Housing Storage etc with you.

4. Choose New Server

Choose which server you are moving to. Usually these cost LOTRO Points 2,495 LOTRO Points. Until the end of August 2025, transfers to the new 64-Bit servers will be free.

What Transfers With You

If you remember to do the storage transfer, then the short answer is: most things transfer with you and your character.

  • Your character: appearance, current gear and current outfits.
  • Their name: or something like it. (See: Will I Keep My Name?)
  • Your War-steed: and current outfits.
  • Storage: Bags, Storage Vault Vault, Wallet, Wardrobe Wardrobe and Shared Storage Shared Storage.
  • Housing Storage: despite houses not transferring, once you purchase a house on your new server, your housing storage items will be waiting for you.
  • Wallet: Your character’s personal (non-shared) currency, tokens, coins etc.
  • Shared Currencies: e.g. Figments of Splendor Figments of Splendour, Embers of Enchantment Embers of Enchantment (up to the currency cap).
  • Destiny Points: Do you remember you accumulated those? I do, simply to get the XP bonus – or occasionally a run-speed buff (I play a Guardian most of the time). All players accumulate them, but only VIPs can spend them on Perks. (More on the WikiExternal Link (Opens in New Window/Tab))
  • Misc: All other key aspects of your character’s stats, Virtue XP/VXP virtues and traits etc.

What Does Not Transfer With You?

  1. Legendary Track Progress: each server’s is separately tracked.
  2. Houses: This is too complicated to put into a bullet list. The literal house does not move. The rest of it is tricksy. See Below ↓
  3. In-game Mail: Make sure you remove all attachments (and COD money!) from your mail before transferring. If you don’t, in the official words of LOTRO, “any in-game mail is lost forever on your former world” (Dun-dun-duuuuuuun).
  4. Auctions: active listings will not travel with you. Put these back in your bags to relist on your new Game World.
  5. Friends and Ignore Lists: If you’re like me and don’t have a friends list, you’re fine. If you’re a socialite, or like to play with a small group of tight friends, then make sure you screenshot or type up your friends list. You’ll have to add them back into the list on your new LOTRO server.

Houses

This section relates to Personal Housing. Kinship housing has different instructions. See here.

For some of us, this is not a trivial matter. It will be even harder for those with Kin houses. And I really feel for someone I saw on the LOTRO Forums who declared they have “twelve fully-furnished houses”. Ouch.

How you handle your server move in relation to housing differs depending on the type of house you have. By that I mean: is it a Standard House (paid for in gold and silver), or a Premium House (paid for in Writs and/or Mithril Coins)?

Standard House

You do not need to pack up your house beforehand. When you move servers, you should receive the coins needed to purchase a similar sized property. Your decorations will almost certainly be in ESCROW.

Visit an Escrow BrokerExternal Link (Opens in New Window/Tab) to retrieve items.

Premium House

If you have a premium house (like Rohan Housing, your decorations will end up in ESCROW and you will receive the cost of re-purchasing a property in scrips in your bags.

Before 2025, you used to only get 90% of the value back. For now, at least, you'll get 100% of it back. I will try and update this if that policy reverts later in 2025.

In both cases, you’ll have to acquire a new property (or twelve!) and then redecorate.

Restrictions in Transferring from One LOTRO Server to Another

Before you switch Game Worlds, it is important to be aware of the following restrictions.

  1. You still cannot change continent: Despite the new servers, you still cannot change from a US server to an EU one, or vice versa.
  2. You cannot transfer to a Legendary Server: these exist in their current forms for a reason and have never allowed transfers to them. If you want to play on a Legendary Server, then jump on one ASAP and get levelling.
  3. You Cannot Exceed Some Currency Caps: if you are transferring from multiple servers, then capped currencies like Figments of Splendor Figments of Splendour will only fill up to the cap. If this might happen to you, spend some on items or cosmetics you could use, keep them in your bags, then transfer.

Most storage and Wallet items will overflow if needed…However, the following items will NOT overflow from your Wallet:

  1. Embers of Enchantment Embers of Enchantment
  2. Motes of Enchantment Motes of Enchantment
  3. Figments of Splendor Figments of Splendour
  4. Monster Play Commendations

Will I Keep my Character Name?

Some of us take time to name our characters for various reasons. And I, for one, get pretty attached to those names. So this is important, especially as, normally, character renames cost LOTRO Points 995 LOTRO Points.

Well, What About My Character’s Name? Answer Meeee!

Fine, fine!

  1. If your name is not taken on the new server, then you’re good to go. You’ll keep your blessèd name.
  2. If someone has that name already, then names are granted on a first come, first served basis, except in special situations.
Yours will be renamed with a number – e.g. Galadriel-1. You will get a one-time free character rename by logging into the game and using the command /changename "New Character Name"
  3. If you think someone has purposefully taken your name with bad intent, open a help ticket and explain the situation to LOTRO Support directly.

Kin Game World Changes

If your kin is changing LOTRO servers, then you will need to chat with your kin leaders beforehand. While you can all transfer at the same time, the Kin Leader should be the first to log in.

Doing this, the Kin will be automatically recreated on the destination server and subsequent members will be automatically added to the roster.

If you login before your Kin Leader, you probably won’t be automatically re-added meaning you’ll have to re-find the leaders for an invite.

! If your kin is moving servers, the Kin leader must sell/abandon the kin house before moving.

You should NOT disband your Kinship. Kinship leaders MUST Abandon or Sell their Kinship Houses before they can transfer. Kinship leaders should Sell their Premium Kinship Houses in order to have 100% of the Writ cost of the Kinship house returned to them.

New 64-Bit Server Specific Information

I don’t want to duplicate LOTRO’s exhaustive official page on the matter. But here are some highlights about transferring to one of the new LOTRO 64-Bit Servers:

  • Transfer Cost: transfer to a new 64-bit server from a 32-bit one will be free until and including 31st August 2025 (usually meaning 3am, 1st September 2025 /servertime).
  • Languages: with the effective “removal” of the servers that attracted French and German players, LOTRO is working on creating designated chat channels to faciliate discussions and coordination in those languages.
Il n’y a pas de pression de changer votre serveur. Parlez-en avec vos amis avant de pendre une décision. Les anciens serveurs de SdAO resteront ouverts.
  • Kinships: Coordinate with your kin leader. As I said above, transferring after them may save you some havoc in getting re-added to your kin on “the other side”. I would add this: make sure you have a way of contacting them should you need manually re-adding.
  • Temporary Free Transfers: in case you change your mind, or your friends chose a different server, LOTRO has scheduled specific weeks you can transfer between the new 64-Bit Servers for free. These dates are changeable, so keep an eye on social media and the forums or Discord.

TL;DR Changing LOTRO Servers and Game Worlds

Changing LOTRO Servers is relatively simple. However, there are some key considerations such as which characters to move, what possessions will you take with you and who do you want to play with?

With the 64-Bit servers there is a time where you can transfer for free, before it reverts to the high LOTRO Points cost. Hopefully this guide has helped you ensure you’ve thought it all through and maybe can approach it carefully, but confidently.

Wherever you continue to live in Middle-earth, enjoy playing LOTRO. And do whatever you can to make sure players you interact with can do the same.
